Foundation Report

As one of the most challenging economic downturns in recent history continued, Northwestern Memorial Foundation was able to report the largest fundraising year since its inception. A significant percentage of our fundraising progress was due to planned gift commitments and matured estates, highlighting the importance of estate planning for the future. These pledges help to ensure that Northwestern Memorial will have the ability to continue to provide the highest level of patient care and service to the community.

Most notably, in May of 2009, Northwestern Memorial announced the generous gift of $19.5 million from the estate of the late William W. Wirtz. In recognition of this philanthropy, Northwestern Memorial Hospital created the William W. Wirtz Cancer Innovation Fund. This endowment supports patient access to a wide range of essential services for individuals with cancer; recruitment of leading physicians and physician-scientists specializing in cancer research and treatment; and allows Northwestern Memorial to remain at the vanguard of emerging cancer technologies.

As we begin to accelerate implementation of our plans for Northwestern Medicine, we are identifying numerous opportunities for donors to invest in crucial areas of patient care, research and education. In addition, with our campus partners, we are committed to working together with each donor to ensure every gift has the greatest and most meaningful impact, brings cures and treatment options safely to patients faster and supports our missions.

Each donor and each gift – of any size – is important to the success of Northwestern Memorial. Your giving makes a significant difference to our patients, their families and the entire Northwestern family. We offer our most heartfelt thanks for your generous support of Northwestern Memorial.
