About Northwestern Memorial HealthCare

Fiscal Year 2009

Northwestern Memorial HealthCare is the corporate parent of Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Memorial Foundation.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital, located on the downtown medical campus, is one of the country's premier academic medical center hospitals and a major referral center for the Midwest and beyond. We provide a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services and deliver care through 854 beds in our Feinberg Pavilion, Prentice Women's Hospital and Stone Institute of Psychiatry. As the primary teaching hospital for Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, we work in collaboration to advance healthcare through clinical innovation, medical education and breakthrough research.

Our history dates back 145 years to the early work of our predecessor institutions, Passavant and Wesley Memorial hospitals, both distinguished by a dedication to provide compassionate care regardless of a patient's ability to pay. We continue this proud tradition within our hospital facilities and through our longstanding partnerships with community health providers, making quality care and services available to the medically underserved.

Virtually every medical specialty is represented by the medical staff of 1,656 physicians who also carry faculty appointments with Feinberg. Eleven of our medical specialties are ranked among the nation's best by U.S. News & World Report magazine with six of them ranking the highest in Illinois. We have earned Magnet recognition, the gold standard for nursing excellence and are distinguished as one of America's "100 Most Wired" hospitals by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine for state-of-the-art technology that supports patient care.

Recognized as a national leader in quality and patient safety, we have earned one of the nation's top awards for quality by the National Committee for Quality Health Care. We consistently are named to The Leapfrog Group's "Top Hospitals" list for quality and safety of care practices. We also earned a place on Working Mother magazine's list of "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers" and in fiscal year 2009 were named to the magazine's "Best in Class" list for Training and Development.

Consumers in the eight-county Chicago region have ranked Northwestern Memorial as their "most preferred" hospital in market research for 15 consecutive years. In the same survey, we have been recognized as the sole winner of the "Consumer Choice" award for having the best doctors, best nurses, best overall quality and best image and reputation for five consecutive years.
