Nurses as Leaders

Nursing excellence at Northwestern is fostered through shared leadership, continuous learning and multidisciplinary collaborations among the healthcare team. Our focus on quality and continuous improvement helps us find ways to provide care that is safe and effective while adding to the body of knowledge that is shaping the nursing profession both within the hospital and beyond. Nursing at Northwestern is patient-focused and strives to impact the patient's experience at all levels, from care at the bedside to research projects to providing leadership for new initiatives that help us deliver exceptional care. We are proud to have earned Magnet recognition, the gold standard for the practice of nursing.

Patient care at Northwestern is enhanced through the sharing of multiple perspectives. Nurses meet routinely with physicians, medical residents, social workers and case managers to review each patient's plan of care.

Shaping the Future

Mentoring comes in many different forms at Northwestern, from formal relationships between physicians and medical students or residents to more informal ones that develop through daily hospital interactions. Northwestern offers a rich educational experience that welcomes inquiry and the sharing of knowledge among physicians and the students, interns, residents and fellows who benefit from a culture of learning. No matter how the mentor-mentee relationship originates, the value remains the same: providing tomorrow’s physicians with role models whose expertise and guidance help shape the way they practice medicine and care for patients.

After Vinky Chadha, MD, paged Meghan O'Halloran, a fourth-year medical student, with an update on a patient, a mentoring relationship was born.
"I really appreciate having someone to talk to or go to for advice," says Meghan, who talks about the value of her regular meetings with Dr. Chadha in this video.

Philanthropic Partnerships

The impact of philanthropy can be seen in many ways: at the bedside, where patients benefit from clinical innovation; in the laboratory, where researchers seek breakthrough knowledge; in the community, where programs and services improve health status; and in the medical school, where the next generation of physicians benefit from rigorous education and training. Philanthropy provides essential support to the shared vision of Northwestern Medicine, and our generous benefactors allow us to dream big and to pursue new pathways that will advance healthcare and science beyond what is known today.

Develop People, Culture and Resources

Our vision to become a top 10 medical school and top 10 hospital by 2020 can be accomplished by having the right people and resources in place to support such an ambitious goal. At Northwestern Medicine, we recognize the significance that our people bring to this strategy and are focused on recruiting, developing and retaining an exceptional workforce of physicians, nurses, scientists and staff and educating top students who share our values and are committed to our goals. Fostering a strong culture that focuses on long-term planning, sound financial discipline and philanthropy are essential to our continued growth.
